Volunteer Events

In the ethos of Georgetown University, service to the community is not just expected, but also necessary. Therefore, we have put up a series of volunteering and service events, in collaboration with the Georgetown Retail and Luxury Association (GRLA) and the McDonough Mentors and Consultants (MMC), to exercise the spirit of giving and service to the communities in the DC Metro Area.

Together, we present the Volunteer ChallengeBare Necessities, and Blood Donation Drive events.

Volunteer Challenge

One of the most important and effective ways to give is with our time. The Volunteer Challenge simply involves volunteering: cohorts will be ranked and scored on the total volunteer hours accumulated in two weeks: from Monday, April 10, 2023 at 12am to Sunday, April 23, 2023 at 3pm.

The Volunteers Club will host a number of volunteering events and will post third-party volunteering events on HoyaConnect so that everyone will not have to look far to participate. Note that Saturday, April 22, 2023 is Earth Day, so there will be many things to volunteer at!

Rules

1. All cohorts are participating in the Volunteer Challenge.

2. All volunteering activities performed from Monday, April 10, 2023 at 12am to Sunday, April 23, 2023 at 3pm, and their hours logged into HoyaConnect by 3pm on Sunday, April 23, 2023 will be counted.

3. To level the playing field for Flex cohorts, they will be given a handicap multiplier of 2.5X for the total number of hours they accumulate. To be clear: each hour a Flex student accumulates will be counted as two-and-a-half for the purposes of the event, but will remain as one hour towards their total volunteering hours for awards such as the MBA Community Fellows.

How to Log Your Volunteer Hours

1. Visit the My Service Hours section of HoyaConnect.

2. Tap the Add Service Hours button on the top-right.

3. You would see the following pop-up.

4. If your volunteer event is on HoyaConnect, select Event. Choose the event you attended, and enter the hours you accumulated and the date. If you attended an event but you had not registered on HoyaConnect, ask the event organizer to add your name in the attendee list. Note that sometimes the event host may have already logged your hours on your behalf.

Note: If you had signed up for an external volunteering opportunity that was listed on HoyaConnect, please submit proof of your registration / participation.

5. If your volunteer event is not on HoyaConnect, select Experience. Select the club you volunteered with, or type in the organization name if it is a third-party. Enter the hours and date. Attach a proof of your attendance if any. Include a reference user (someone in Georgetown) or an external reference who can verify your participation.

MBA Community Fellows and Advocates

MBA students who accumulate more than 100 hours of community service by April 30 of their final year will be recognized as Community Fellows at graduation, and 75-100 hours will be recognized as Community Advocates. For more information, review this slide deck.

Bare Necessities

Join us in providing necessities to underprivileged communities and families in the DC Metro Area! Each cohort is scored and ranked on the number of hearts ❤️ they accumulate by performing one or more activities described below.

Professional Clothing Donation Drive

In collaboration with the Georgetown Retail and Luxury Association (GRLA), we will collect donated professional clothing at cohort-labeled bins outside Connelly Commons from Monday, April 17, 2023 at 12am to Friday, April 21, 2023 at 11:59pm. All professional clothing collected will be donated to A Wider Circle, a DC-based charity that fights poverty by fostering the exchange of goods, skills, and connections.

Professional clothing means attire you would wear to an interview or to office work. Clothing should be clean, new or like-new, and seasonally appropriate. The simple guideline is: would you feel confident wearing your donated items to an interview?

Registration is not required. Clothing will be scored in this manner:

  • Shirts, blouses, pants, skirts, dresses: 2❤️ each
  • Jackets, blazers, work shoes, work bags, handbags: 4❤️ each
  • Anything else: 0❤️

Sandwich-making for Martha's Table

In collaboration with the McDonough Mentors and Consultants (MMC), we will host a meat and cheese sandwich-making competition for Martha’s Table at Connelly Commons on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, from 12:30 to 2pm. These sandwiches will go to families that suffer food insecurity.

Each sandwich costs $1 in ingredients and provides 1 meal for the poor and hungry. Anyone may join the competition with a donation of $5 (makes 5 meals), all of which will go into buying ingredients.

Participants will be given one (1) hour to make as many sandwiches they can, and each sandwich will count as 1❤️ towards their cohort total. Each participant will be given one (1) volunteer hour, which will also count towards their Volunteer Challenge total hours.

Registrations begin on Wednesday, April 12, 2023 at 12:00pm.

Rules

1. Flex cohorts that participate in Bare Necessities will be given a handicap of 200❤️. This handicap will be applied after the Martha's Table event concludes.

2. The Organizers reserve the right to determine which donated clothing constitute "professional" or "for office work".

3. Clothing that are not accepted for the donation to A Wider Circle will be placed in a box for anyone to collect at Connelly Commons. Any remaining clothing will be disposed of after Sunday, April 30, 2023.

4. Sandwich-making for Martha's Table is limited to 70 participants, and each cohort may only send a maximum of 20 participants. The Organizers reserve the right to change these limits.

5. Payments and donations for Sandwich-making for Martha's Table is not refundable. If you sign-up after your cohort exceeds 20 participants or the limit at that time, the Organizers will inform you of the fact and request that you find a replacement from another cohort while your spot will be made free for someone else to register. However, if the Organizers increases the limits and you have not found a replacement, you will be reinstated in the competition.

6. If you need to swap your registration to Sandwich-making for Martha's Table with someone else, contact the Organizers to facilitate the exchange. Note that if the other person's cohort has already reached a maximum of 20 participants or the limit at the time of your request, the Organizers will not be able to swap your registration with that person.

7. The one (1) volunteer hour for participants in the Sandwich-making for Martha's Table is contingent in your participation from the start to the end of the event. The Organizers reserve the right to record a part of or no volunteer hours if you leave early.

Blood Donation Drive

SAVE LIVES! The Volunteers Club and Healthcare Business Alliance present the McDonough Cup Blood Donation Drive 2023 in collaboration with the American Red Cross.

Blood is essential for life. It carries oxygen and nutrients throughout the body, fights infections, and helps heal wounds. One donation can save up to three lives. If you are a healthy individual, it is one of the greatest gifts you can give: the gift of life — at almost no cost to you.

The American Red Cross will be at Connelly Commons on Tuesday, April 25, 2023, from 10am to 3pm.

How to Sign-up

1. Determine your eligibility by reading this article on our website. If you are unsure, please contact the American Red Cross at 866-236-3276. Because we have limited spots, we ask that you do not register if you are not eligible.

2. Visit this link, choose a time slot, and register with the American Red Cross.

3. Register for this event on HoyaConnect, so that we can award you the community service hours for your effort.

4. If the spots are fully taken up, please add yourself to the wait list here. If a spot becomes available, or the American Red Cross gives us more spots, we will inform you.

We also ask that if you are unable to make your appointment, please drop your registration so that someone else can take your place!
